In November each year the Health Protection Agency (HPA) publish information about the previous year. These statistics relate to diagnoses in 2010 and are the latest available.

How many people are living with HIV in the UK?

In 2010, an estimated 91,500 people were living with HIV in the UK.  We cannot tell for certain how many people are living with HIV because this number combines the 69,424 people diagnosed with HIV with over 22,000 who were estimated to be infected but undiagnosed. read more

Deaths amongst people living with HIV

In 2010 less than 1% of people with HIV died. This is comparable to mortality for the UK population as a whole; however, the average age at death of people living with HIV is lower than that for the general population. read more

In 2010, an estimated 40,100 men who have sex with men were living with HIV in the UK. This includes 29,600 diagnosed people accessing care and a further 10,500 estimated to be undiagnosed. read more

In 2010 there were 2,068 black Caribbean people in the UK living with a diagnosed HIV infection and accessing HIV care.  However we do not have an estimate for the total number of black Caribbean people living with HIV in the UK as we do not know the number that are undiagnosed. read more

HIV infected adults aged 50 years and over accessing care has seen a five fold increase between 2001 and 2010 from 2,851 to 14,266 representing one in five of all adults seen for HIV care in 2010. This represents one in five of all adults seen for HIV care in 2010. read more
