Budget takes rights away from people with HIV

NAT comments on yesterday's changes in the Budget that will remove the protection against 'dual discrimination'

In the Chancellor of the Exchequer's Budget yesterday there was an announcement in the 'small print' which takes rights away from people with HIV - the protection against 'dual discrimination'.

NAT comments on the mental health needs of people with HIV on Mental Health Action Week

On Mental Health Action Week, 23 – 29 March, NAT calls for the mental health needs of people living with HIV to be more widely recognised. Evidence shows there is a higher prevalence of psychological need amongst people with HIV compared with the general population, and HIV and mental health problems are both highly stigmatised – which often makes people unwilling to speak out.

NAT welcomes new guidance on increased testing of HIV in key risk groups

New guidance released by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommends increased testing of HIV in key risk groups.   The guidance aims to increase the uptake of HIV testing to reduce undiagnosed infection and prevent transmission among African communities and gay men.

NAT comments on HPA figures showing UK-acquired HIV increased 70% among gay men over ten years

Figures from the Health Protection Agency (HPA) released today show that new diagnoses among people infected with HIV in the UK have almost doubled in the past decade (from 1,950 in 2001 to 3,780 in 2010). Gay or bisexual men remain the group most at risk of becoming infected with HIV and new diagnoses in this group alone have increased by 70 per cent in the past 10 years (rising from 1,810 in 2001 to 3,080 in 2010).

Failures of HIV treatment in Immigration Removal Centres are inexcusable

NAT responds to Medical Justice report 'Detained and Denied'

A new report from Medical Justice 'Detained and Denied' outlines 35 cases where people being detained in Immigration Removal Centres (IRCs) have not received the HIV treatment and care to which they are entitled. Failures of care include interruptions to medication (which risks seriously undermining the effectiveness of treatment), breaches of confidentiality and poor access to clinicians.
